Anglo-Zulu War 1879 Painting Guide help needed!

As some of you know, I am color blind. As such I need rather explicit instructions to help me be able to paint things. Does anyone have a good guide that they can share for the British Regulars, the Naval Brigade and Zulus? I would appreciate any help I can get. The Flames of War books offer a perfect guide for me for WWII. Everything else is a magnitude of difficulty higher for me.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Have some plates from Osprey books as PDFs. Drop me an email and I'll see if I can dig them up.

    1. The plates are great if I could translate the color on the page to a particular paint. That is the skill I lack. I am a paint by numbers sort due to red/green color blindness.

    2. If I remember correctly the book covers uniform colors in the different chapters talking about the kit.

  2. I was going to suggest the book Zulu, Isandlwanda and Rorke's Drift by Ian Knight, its also got some great colour plates, but it sounds like they're not gonna be much use!

  3. OK, I just found this on the Warlord Games website. It seems that they have put together paint sets for this to give you a starting point which is just what I need.

Flat Red (Vallejo 957): Tunics, trouser pinstripe
Dark Prussian Blue (Vallejo 899): Trousers
Black (Vallejo 950): Boots, gaiters and pouches
White (Vallejo 951): Webbing, rifle straps, pouches and insignia trim
Pale Sand (Vallejo 837): Sun helmet,
Flat Brown (Vallejo 984): Rifle stock, bayonet scabbard and canteen

    Charred Brown (Vallejo 72.045): Skin
White (Vallejo 951): Shields and cow tails
Flat Brown (Vallejo 984): Spear & Assegai shafts, muskets
German Camo Beige (Vallejo 821): Cow Tails
German Camo Orange Ochre (Vallejo 824): Animal skins
Black (Vallejo 950): Hair, shields and cow tails

I hope this helps someone else as well.

  4. That works better then my Osprey books, thanks.

  5. Chris, I am sooo thrilled to hear you're still going on with this project. I'm buying some OG stuff! We're gonna do Colonials! Yay!
